This poem was featured on BBC World Service, performed by a refugee in the first person.

Travelling hundreds of miles on foot

Pushing prams, holding the hands

Of exhausted children.

Risking life and limb.

Drowning in deep wild water,

Dragged along tracks and roads,

Suffocating in dark hot Lorries,

Crushed by panic-stricken crowds.

Dodging bullets and abuse,

Enduring hunger and hardship.

Risking everything for the chance

Of a life without fear.

Theirs is the voice of desperation,

Unfailing courage and hope.

They are calling out to humanity,

They are people like us.

There is no point in sitting

On the wooden, metal or moral fence.

These people are unstoppable,

We have to let them in.
